Integrated Power System
The IPS effort started in advance of the DD(X) Program. In 1995, a Full Scale Advanced Development (FSAD) contract was awarded; full scale system testing started in Philadelphia in February 1998 and was completed August 2001. Today, IPS is undergoing component manufacturing and testing and Integrated Fight Through Power (IFTP) testing.
The goal under DD(X) is to use permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMMs). As a result of FSAD efforts, Advanced Induction Motors (AIM) are available as the backup to the PMM approach.
Attributes:
- Rapid reconfiguration of power
- Capacity for future combat system upgrades
- Reduced acoustic noise
- Reduced operating & support costs
-
Greater flexibility in ship design
