Music For Recruiting (MFR)

MFR is a program that has been in place since 1997 for recruiters to use as a tool to help reach target audiences. Sponsored by CNRC, local recruiters are able to obtain funding to setup tours in their area for a Navy “rock” band (contemporary group) to perform recruiting shows in their high schools and colleges. Qualifying for Enlistment (Auditions)

FAQs

1.  Where may an applicant audition?

  • Applicants may audition at any Navy Band and the School of Music. See Navy Bands for locations. Auditions may be scheduled at any time, depending on the band’s availability, and the applicant and recruiter’s desires. All auditions are performed on-site.

2.  Who do I call to set up the audition?

  • Contact the Audition Supervisor at the audition site. See Navy Bands for contact information listed by location.

3.  How long will the audition take?

  • The duration of the audition will vary, but will generally take between 20 – 30 minutes for most instrumentalists and vocalists, with the exception of percussionists. Percussionists will be asked to perform on snare drum, drum set, and mallet instruments (marimba, xylophone, etc.), so these auditions generally require one-hour. If the applicant is auditioning on a primary instrument that requires demonstrated skill on a secondary instrument (saxophone, clarinet, flute and euphonium), the audition will generally require 30 - 45 minutes.

4.  How soon will the applicant be notified of the results (qualified/not qualified)?

  • To assist Recruiters, PERS-64 can, generally, provide a 2-hour turnaround on applications received during normal working hours, except in the case of Vocalist/Entertainer (NEC 3825), which require a videotape of the audition to be forwarded along with the package (audition sites provide the videotape); however, once received, PERS-64 can, generally, provide the same 2-hour or less turnaround. Results are faxed immediately to the applicant’s recruiter upon determination.

5.  Does the applicant need to "sign up" before scheduling an audition?

  • No. Applicants do not have to enlist before auditioning. They may audition at anytime, as long as a Navy Recruiter schedules the audition.

6.  How do we process the applicant after the audition is completed?

  • Once the “qualified for assignment to MU “A” School” notification letter is received, Recruiters complete the normal enlistment process in accordance with the Navy Recruiting Manual. The notification letter will contain the enlistment guarantees and paygrade authorizations.
