...The U.S. Navy's "Ambassadors" in the Midwest
Created in 1917 by Lieutenant Commander John Philip Sousa, Navy Band Great Lakes has
performed for thousands of audiences throughout the Midwest. Since first organized on
Naval Training Center Great Lakes, the band has represented the pride and professionalism
that has become synonymous with the United States Navy. Navy Band Great Lakes is in its
82nd year of continuous naval service.
Comprised of 45 professional Navy musicians, the band operates in an eleven-state area
stretching from Michigan to North Dakota. In addition to being a top-notch military
ceremonial unit, the band maintains the following individual traveling and performing
units to meet today's diverse musical requirements:
The premier unit of Navy Band Great Lakes. This forty-member group
performs concert band literature, music from Broadway, film soundtracks, big band
favorites, as well as traditional marches in the style of our illustrious founder, John
Philip Sousa.
An eighteen-member big band, the Jazz Ensemble features popular big band
hits and contemporary jazz. Their versatile repertoire includes music by such masters as
Hank Levy, Thad Jones, Don Menza, Glen Miller, and Count Basie, as well as music written
by the band's own staff arrangers. Vocal and instrumental selections are featured in all
performances.
An eight-member contemporary music ensemble band emphasizing the newest
music of today, while also including the classic sounds of rock-and-roll.
A five-piece brass ensemble playing music for all ages. Performing
everything from Baroque to jazz, their versatility makes them the choice for most any
occasion.
The newest addition to Navy Band Great Lakes, this three-member woodwind
trio features music from J.S. Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. This group is ideal for
receptions, dinners, and clinics.
