Peleliu Island , 15 Sept 2004 - Local Tour Guide Tangie Jesus gives Rear Admiral Arthur J. Johnson, Commander, U.S. Naval Region Marianas, a tour of the system of defensive caves built by the Japanese Army on Peleliu during World War II.  The admiral was on Peleliu to attend ceremonies commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Sept. 1944 Battle of Peleliu, which was fought to take the Palau Islands from the Japanese and protect General Douglas MacArthur's flank for his campaign to retake the Philippine Islands during World War II.  U.S. Navy photo by Photographer's Mate 2nd Class Nathanael T. Peleliu Island, 15 Sept 2004 - Rear Admiral Arthur J. Johnson, Commander, U.S. Naval Region Marianas, meets and embraces former Japanese soldier Kiyokazu Tsuchida during ceremonies commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Sept. 1944 Battle of Peleliu, which was fought to take the Palau Islands from the Japanese and protect General Douglas MacArthur's flank for his campaign to retake the Philippine Islands during World War II.  Tsuchida, who was stationed on Peleliu, hid in the island's caves and jungles for nearly two years after the war, and did not surrender to American forces until April of 1947.  U.S. Navy photo by Photographer's Mate 2nd Class Nathanael T.
