Imagery is perhaps one of the fastest growing commodities on the
internet. These images serve the Defense Community for operational
intelligence and documentation of operations. They are also used
in command information products and briefings.
AFIS is responsible for the Joint
Combat Camera Center in the Pentagon. The center collects and
distributes imagery provided by the Services' combat camera teams
which are deployed throughout the world.
The Center operates a near real-time Internet web site and also
issues special CD-ROM collections of related imagery.
Photo imagery (still, motion, video) is one of the fastest growing
demands from internal and external publics.
One of our greatest challenges is to maintain that imagery so that
it is easily accessible when needed. The difficulties of receiving,
cataloging, storing, and retrieving hundreds of thousands of images
is daunting at best.
