- The Navy department Library in cooperation with the Naval Historical Foundation has posted Rear Admiral L. A. Kimberly's Samoan Hurricane, an eyewitness account of the Storm at Apia, Samoa, in March 1889. (October 4, 2004)
- NOTICE: The Operational Archives is closing to researchers from 1 December 2004 to 1 March 2005 for processing of records. Letter inquiries will be answered. (1 October 2004)
- What a Navy Command should do if it is going to be Disestablished (Shore Commands), Deactiviated (Aviation Squadrons), or Decommissioned (Ships) is explained. (11 August 2004)
- The programs of the Material Section of the Curator Branch and its many programs, including artifact loan, and sources of records are explained. (6August 2004)
- To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Tonkin Gulf Crisis, 2-4 August 1964, many of the messages, action reports, telegrams, etc related to this Crisis are posted. (2 August 2004)

- The Navy Department Library posted information on the Yangtze River Patrol, as well as the 1927 Naval District Manual. (9 July 2004)
- The Navy Department Library posted the Center for Naval Analyses publication U.S.-Greek Naval Relations Begin: Antipiracy Operations in the Aegean Sea, describing the U.S. Navy's campaign against Greek pirates who interferred with American shipping in the Aegean during the 1820's. (1 July 2004)
- Two new online publications are available from the Navy Department Library: The Religions of Vietnam and Guidelines: Naval Social Customs, The Navy Wifeline. (16 June 2004)
- The Navy Department Library has added the account of the sinking of the German battleship Bismarck and rescue of survivors from the senior submarine headquarters. (9 June 2004)
- Information on the need for permits to dive on U.S. Navy ship and aircraft wrecks is available from the Underwater Archaeology Branch. (28 May 2004)
- The Operational Archives Branch will be closed to researchers on Fridays as well as Wednesdays beginning in June 2004. (14 May 2004)
- A new online exhibit, The Alfred Agate Collection: The United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842, is now available from the Navy Art Gallery. (12 May 2004)
- Several new pages are available from the Curator Branch, including an online exhibit of Builder's, Memorial, and Historical Data Plaques; a listing of other online exhibits featuring artifacts held by the Curator Branch; and information on the Branch's Materials Section. (10 May 2004)
- The Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships index page now has links to the abbreviations and symbols used in this publication. (10 May 2004)
- The Ships History Branch is continually updating the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships (DANFS) on the website. In March and April 2004, new DANFS histories were posted for these ships: Albatross, Barbour County, Boston, Carpenter, Chicago, Constellation, Essex, Franklin, G-1, G-2, G-3, G-4, Giraffe, Laws, Monitor, Morton, Narwhal, Nields, Osmus and CSS Arkansas. In addition, minor changes were made to Alameda, Darter, Flasher, LST-71, Manitowac, Monocacy, Nautilus, Purdy and Silver Cloud. Typographical errors were fixed on several other ships, including Antietam and Mississippi. In general whenever substantial changes have been made to DANFS, the ship history will be marked by a "new item" banner. (3 May 2004)

- In honor of the 150th anniversary of Commodore Matthew C. Perry's expedition to Japan, the Navy Department Library has posted extensive information on the Life of Perry; the "Opening of Japan"; and an exhibition of documents in the library from the expedition. (19 March 2004)
- The new list of Events at The Navy Museum and also the monthly Naval History Seminars that are held at noon in the Museum Education Center is posted. (9 March 2004)
- New guidance on the borrowing of U.S. Navy artifacts is available from the Curator Branch. (9 March 2004)
- The Operational Archives Branch is open for researchers. (8 March 2004)
- The remarks by James R. Schlesinger, "Midway in Retrospect: The Still Under-Appreciated Victory" are added to the The Battle of Midway: 4-7 June 1942 FAQ. (19 February 2004)
- The Ships History Branch has transferred the ship deck logs for 1973 to the Modern Military Branch, National Archives and Records Administration, 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, MD 20740. (12 February 2004)
- Information about sources of information on World War II Naval Armed Guard as well as on Merchant Ships and Merchant Mariners. (9 February 2004)
- The Naval Aviation News staff has made the all the back issues from 1943 through 1989 available for viewing in .pdf on the website. The current issue is available for viewing in .pdf and html. (6 February 2003)
- The Navy Museum announces new weekend hours starting March 6, 2004! To make arrangements for a weekend visit, please call 202-433-6897 before noon on Fridays and use the information on Visiting the Naval Historical Center. (5 February 2004)
- The Naval Historical Center and the Ships History Branch are proud to announce that the out of print publication, the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships is now online. The entries are as they appeared in the original publication. However, the histories will be updated in the future by the Ships History historians. (30 January 2004)
