Navy Seeks Next Trauma Symposium Participants

By: Ellen Maurer, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery Public Affairs

WASHINGTON – Naval Hospital Rota Spain is accepting reservations for an Operational Trauma Symposium to be held Nov. 8 —10.

The symposium will feature courses focusing on Tactical Combat Casualty Care, as well as amputations and several other trauma care areas.

“We are very excited about the upcoming symposium as it will be an excellent training opportunity for our front line medical personnel,” said Rear Adm. Nancy Lescavage, commander, Naval Medical Education and Training Command. “It will expose them to typical combat trauma and treatment from the front line. It is another opportunity to provide the right training to the right personnel at the right time.”

Guest speakers will include Professor Stanley Minken, a Vietnam veteran and current professor of surgery at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., as well as several Navy surgeons who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Hospitalman Luis Fonseca, awarded the Navy Cross for his actions in Operation Iraqi Freedom, is also slated to speak at the symposium.

Military physicians are the target audience for the course, but all medical staff members are welcome to apply, according to Lt. John McCombs, Naval Hospital Rota’s public affairs officer.
