These instructions allow an
authorized Naval Postgraduate School user to establish a connection to the NPS

a connection to the Internet and the NPGS Intranet and to map a NPGS home
directory through a
standard telephone.

(1) Right Click My Network Places,
(2) Select Properties

(4) Complete the wizard.

(6) To map your "H" drive for home see the instructions below.
Windows 95/98
NPS Local Area Telephone Connection:
When connecting to the NPS Remote Access Server (RAS) from a Windows 95/98 and Windows NT/2000 Professional computer, a new dial-up connection must be configured.
Add a New Dial-Up Connection
1. Double click the “My Computer” icon on
the desktop.
2. If the "Dial-Up Networking icon" is not present you must install it (Installing Dial-Up Networking). If there is a “Dial-Up Networking icon” present ensure that TCP/IP is installed (Installing TCP/IP).
3. In the “My Computer” window, double click “Dial-Up Networking.”
3. The “Dial-Up Networking”
window will appear. Double click
“Make New Connection."
4. The “Make New Connection”
dialogue box appears and you are prompted to name the connection. The name “NPS-RAS” is recommended. Then click “Next”.
5. You are then prompted to
enter the telephone number for the computer to call. Enter 656-4695 and click “Next.” (This is the
number for the hunt group.)
6. You will then see the
final screen which indicates that you have successfully created a new Dial-up
Networking connection. Click
“Finish."
7. You may then elect to
create a shortcut to this connection on the desktop. To do so, locate the icon for the
connection you have just configured in the “Dial-Up Networking” window and right
click on it. Select “Create
Shortcut” from the drop-down menu.
You will be notified that you cannot create a shortcut here. Click “Yes” to place the shortcut on the
desktop.
8. Double clicking this icon
will initiate your connection to the NPS-RAS server. You will be prompted to enter your
username and password to log into the NPGS domain of the School’s Windows NT
network. For security reasons, DO
NOT select “Save password” unless you are in a secure environment.
Doing
so will allow anyone access to your e-mail and Windows NT account at
anytime.
Long Distance/TAD
Telephone Connection:
When connecting to the NPS-RAS server while on travel away from the NPS local area, a dial-up
connection via 1-800 telephone
service is available. To do this,
follow the instructions above, substituting 800-656-2944 for the phone number in
step 5.
To map to your Home directory on the NPS Intranet:
If a Windows Logon box appears when you start your computer:
1. Logon with your NPGS username and password:
2. Connect using the NPS-RAS Dial-Up Networking icon.
3. Right click on the My Computer Icon and select "Map Network Drive". Select the drive letter H (Or any available drive) for Home directory. In the path field enter \\server name\username$. Click OK.
If no logon box appears when you start Windows, you are using a predefined user name and a blank password. You must reconfigure the logon so that you can use your NPGS username and password.
1. Delete your current Windows logon file. It is .pwl file that resides in the "C:\Windows" subdirectory. (You can find it by Start/Find/Files and entering *.pwl) This is also the subdirectory where all other saved network password files reside. If you do not know your Windows logon password file name, you must delete all the .pwl files in that subdirectory.
2. Restart. Windows will attempt to create a new user logon file. At the logon type in your NPGS username and and password. If you do not want a logon box to appear each time you start your computer leave the password blank but be sure to type in your NPGS username. Click OK. If you leave the password blank, you will be asked to provide your password only when logging on to the NPGS network.
Note: TweakUI is a utility from Microsoft that will automatically log you on at startup without showing the logon screen. Install TweakUI, start it up and click on the Logon tab. Step by step instructions for installing TweakUI are available at:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui or
http://www.bondgroup.net/TweakUI.htm
Troubleshooting:
If there is not a "Map Network Drive" dropdown selection in Windows Explorer, Client for Microsoft Networks must be installed on your computer. (Installing Client for Microsoft Networks).
If the dialin stalls at the logging on network sequence, there are problems mapping the drive, or you receive an input box that asks only for a password and then doesn't accept it, you are not successfully logging into the NPGS Domain. Recheck your logon username and password.
