Rear Admiral John D. Butler, , is assigned as Program Executive Officer (Submarines), for the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Research, Development and Acquisition), Washington, D.C.A native of Texas City, Tex., and a 1970 graduate of Texas City High School, Rear Adm. Butler received his BS in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin in 1974 and his MS in Acoustic Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif., in 1986. He is also a graduate of the Management Program for Executives at the Katz Graduate School of Business, University of Pittsburgh; Professional Summer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and the Advanced Program Managers course at Defense Systems Management College, Fort Belvoir, Va. Rear Adm. Butler was commissioned in the Navy via the Nuclear Power Officer Candidate Program in fiscal year 1975. He was selected for lateral transfer to the Engineering Duty Officer community in 1984.
Rear Adm. Butler was promoted to flag rank in December 2001. His previous flag assignments have included: Commander, Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Newport, R.I., and Deputy Commander for Undersea Technology (SEA-93), Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C.
Rear Adm. Butler is sea duty assignments have included: Division Officer on board USS Will Rogers (SSBN 659), operating from Rota, Spain; Navigator/ Operations Officer on board USS James K. Polk (SSBN 645), operating from Holy Loch, Scotland; Navigator/ Operations Officer on board USS James Madison (SSBN 627) operating from Kings Bay, Ga.; and Repair Officer on board USS Proteus (AS19), operating from Agana, Guam. He completed qualification and is designated "Qualified for Command of Submarines."
Rear Adm. Butler's shore assignments have included: Attack Submarine Training Head for the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Submarine Warfare); AN/BSY-1 Submarine Combat and Acoustic System (PMS417) Chief Engineer for Program Executive Officer, Submarine Combat and Weapons Systems; Seawolf -Class Submarine (PMS350) Assistant Program Manager (Design and Construction) for Program Executive Officer, Submarines; Strategic and Attack Submarines (PMS392) Major Program Manager for Naval Sea Systems Command; and Executive Assistant and Naval Aide to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Research, Development and Acquisition).
He has also served in temporary assignments attached to the Applied Physics Laboratory Ice Station, Arctic Ocean; Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Groton, Conn., and Newport News, Va.; and attached in support of U.S. Embassies at Cairo, Egypt; Moscow, Russia; and Panama City, Panama.
Rear Adm. Butler's personal awards include the Legion of Merit (3 awards), Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, in addition to other service and unit awards.
