The Department of the Navy (DON)is firmly committed to enhancing the quality of work/life for our military and civilian personnel by forging a more dynamic and complimentary link between their home life and their work life. Family-friendly workplace programs are an integral part of Department's efforts to remain a competitive employer of choice in the 21^st century. These programs are an essential ingredient in our quest to retain and attract our best and brightest personnel.

On July 11, 1994, President Clinton directed the head of each executive department or agency to establish a program to encourage and support the expansion of flexible family-friendly work arrangements, including: job sharing; career part-time employment; alternative work schedules; telecommuting and satellite work locations.
