Ambassador Lavin 's July 4th Remarks

Singapore Minister for Transport Mr. Yeo Cheow Tong and U.S. Ambassador Frank LavinMinister Yeo, Members of Parliament, fellow diplomats, distinguished guests, friends, thank you for joining us to celebrate the birthday of the United States of America.

228 years ago in Philadelphia, a group of colonials met to declare their independence. Those brave leaders risked everything -- their reputations, their fortunes, their lives--to build a nation dedicated to equality and liberty, and based on the consent of its citizens.

The United States has journeyed a great distance since those days in the struggle to fulfill the promise of our forefathers. We have met tests and sacrifice, and even today as we celebrate, we reflect on the men and women risking their lives to bring freedom to other countries. In Afghanistan and Iraq, Americans with friends and allies from around the world are introducing democracy to people long denied their basic human rights. We are grateful for Singapore’s support in these noble efforts.

With gratitude for the patriots of 228 years ago, with admiration for the men and women who serve today, with respect and appreciation for Singapore’s friendship, may God bless our two great nations.
