What is FOIA?

FOIA is a Federal law that establishes the public’s right to request existing records from Federal government agencies.

Purpose of this site:

This site allows you to obtain information regarding making Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) records. It will provide you with a brief description of your rights and the manner in which we will respond to your requests. The information contained herein is not intended to be definitive or exhaustive. The FOIA, Title 5, United States Code, Section 552, along with the Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of Navy (DON) regulations, governs how requests will be processed within the DON. DoD Regulation 5400.7-R, "DOD FOIA Program," of 4 September 1998, can be found at Part 286 of Title 32 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Secretary of the Navy Instruction 5720.42F, Subj: (DON)(FOIA) PROGRAM, can be found at Part 701 of Title 32 of the CFR. The CFR is available in most libraries. This web site also provides access to these regulations. These instructions can also be purchased from the National Technical Information Service (NTIS), 5285 Port Royal Road, Springfield, VA 22161.

Due to its size and complexity, the DoD's FOIA program is decentralized among the several "DoD Components," which operate their own FOIA offices and respond directly to the public for their own records. If you desire records from an agency, component, or activity other than Naval Air Systems Command and its subordinate activities, you may use the Related Links to connect with those websites.

This office, the Freedom of Information Act/Privacy Act Office (AIR-11.4), is responsible for responding to requests for records under the cognizance of headquarters, Naval Air Systems Command. Information as to the identity and location of our principle subordinate activities may be obtained from this web site or links provided on it.
