About OCCAM

The Office of Cancer Complementary and Alternative Medicine (OCCAM) was established in October 1998 to coordinate and enhance the activities of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in the arena of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).

  • Promoting and supporting research within CAM disciplines and modalities as they relate to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer, cancer-related symptoms and side effects of conventional treatment.

  • Coordinating NCI’s CAM research and information activities.

  • Coordinating NCI’s collaboration with other governmental and non-governmental organizations on CAM cancer issues.

  • Providing an interface with health practitioners and researchers regarding CAM cancer issues.
