Alberto Jose Mora - General Counsel of the Navy       Alberto J. Mora, the 20th General Counsel of the Department of the Navy, was sworn into office on July 25, 2001.

      Alberto J. Mora was most recently Of Counsel to the law firm of Greenberg Traurig, where he specialized in international law. An attorney since 1982, Mr. Mora was based in the firm's Washington, D.C. office. He is admitted to the Bars of Florida, Washington, D.C., and their respective Federal courts.

      Mr. Mora's private practice focused both on international dispute resolution and transactions. His dispute resolution experience includes both litigated and non-litigated matters, often involving foreign sovereigns and foreign policy dimensions. On the transactional side, Mr. Mora represented clients in a wide range of commercial and corporate transborder transactions and ventures, including project finance matters.

      Mr. Mora served in the U.S. State Department as a Foreign Service Officer from 1975 to 1978, being posted to the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal, as a political officer and subsequently to Washington, D.C., where his responsibilities centered on the United Nations system. From 1989 to 1993, he served in the Bush administration as General Counsel of the United States Information Agency, where he was awarded the Distinguished Honor Award, the Agency's highest recognition. On three occasions, starting in 1995, Mr. Mora was appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate to a seat on the Broadcasting Board of Governors, the entity which governs U.S. international broadcasting, including the Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio and TV Marti, and Radio Free Asia.

      Mr. Mora is a graduate of Swarthmore College (with Honors) and of the University of Miami School of Law, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Lawyers of the Americas: The University of Miami Journal of International Law. In 1980 he was awarded an OAS Fellowship by the Organization of American States for the study of international law in Brazil.

      Among other board memberships, Mr. Mora served on the boards of the National Council for International Visitors, Radio Free Asia, and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Mr. Mora is proficient in Spanish, Portuguese, and French.
