NOTES TO USERS

The Skill Code "Dictionary" is developed and issued by the Civilian Career Management Directorate, HQ AFPC/DPK. Individual career programs, through various panel activities, identify the need for and develop definitions for skill, shred and subshred codes. These definitions are used by Civilian Personnel Flight (CPF) representatives in carrying out their personnel management responsibilities for career program managed positions.

The "Dictionary" is intended to provide clarification of select skill, shred and subshred codes to ensure consistency of coding for career program managed positions. Skill code sets are used to define the various levels within a rating and ranking template; therefore, to ensure individuals receive proper consideration when competing for career program positions, it is critical that positions with similar functions within a career field receive the same skill codes.

Definitions are generally provided only for codes which are not readily identified by either the title of the code, or by information contained in the Position Classification or Qualification Standards.  Separate indexes are provided for General Schedule and Federal Wage System series definitions.

Codes which are defined in the Dictionary are identified in Base Table 465 by an asterisk preceding the clear text.

There may be one, or several, career programs which use a given skill code and which contributed to the construction of its definition. Questions from CPF representatives on skill codes used by the Career Programs should be addressed to the career program managing the position (see the Career Program Advisory Service for specific guidance on position management). Employees should contact their servicing CPF representative on questions regarding the skill coding of their positions.
