Skill Coding of Personnel Records

Welcome to the Directorate of Civilian Personnel Operations Classification Page.  These pages contain information to help classifiers readily access information that pertain to them.

The Air Force Personnel Center (AFPC) Classification Branch is responsible for skill coding all new accessions and previous work experiences for all employees serviced by AFPC.

Skill codes are part of a computerized record in DCPDS.  They reflect duties of an employee's current position and previous work experiences.  These codes are used in referring candidates for employment, placement of current employees into other positions, determining training and development needs for employees and selection for training under competitive procedures.  By using skill codes, pay grades, and other data elements, personnelists can compare candidates' possession of knowledge, skills, and abilities with those required to fill vacant positions.  Skill codes provide information about skills available or needed within the civilian work force as a whole.  They are useful in other processes such as skills location for special missions or projects, special emphasis programs and Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) analysis.

The first full week of each month the classification staff is dedicated to coding new accessions and updates.  Current policy for completion of coding is 90 days from the employee's initial hire date or 90 days from the date of receipt of update request. There is no one personnelist dedicated to a base; the coding received each month is mass assigned.  At a minimum, coding for all employees will include experience three grades below their current grade or 10 years of experience, whichever is greater.

Employee updates must be submitted to AFPC/DPCMC through the servicing Civilian Personnel Flight (CPF) at the employee’s installation.

Employees should review their career briefs on the secure web to check the status of the update request.  If 90 days has passed and employee’s web career brief has not been updated, the employee should work through their servicing CPF to request status.  Please do not send status inquiries until the 90 days has elapsed.

Inquiries should be limited to those over the 90 day timeframe or those missing qualifying federal experience.
