FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA)

Introduction

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), 5 United States Code 552, allows you to obtain information from various agencies of the federal government, including the Department of the Navy. FOIA is implemented by the Navy, in Secretary of the Navy Instruction 5720.42F, Department of the Navy Freedom of Information Act Program (SECNAVINST 5720.42F).

Types of records maintained within NPC

The Navy Personnel Command maintains various service record information pertaining to active duty and reserve U.S. Navy personnel. The name, rank, date of rank, gross salary, past duty assignments, source of commission, promotion sequence number, awards and decorations, attendance at professional and military schools and duty status at any given time, are releasable provided the information in question is applicable and readily available.

The Navy Personnel Command is responsive for the duty assignment of our active U.S. Navy personnel. We authorize advancements, promotions, enlisted rate and officer designator conversions, separations, resignations, retirements and a wide variety of quality of life programs. Making a Freedom of Information Act Request

Requests are accepted via any of the three vehicles listed below:

Label your request “Freedom of Information Act Request” on the request and also on the envelope (if you submit by mail). Describe the specific record(s) you are seeking with enough detail so that a knowledgeable official of the activity may locate the record with a reasonable amount of effort. Such detail should include descriptive information, time frame to search, etc.

State your willingness to pay all fees or those up to a specific amount or provide justification to support a fee waiver. Agreements to pay fees are considered to be up to $250.00, unless another amount is specified.
