030322-N-4308O-024 The Mediterranean Sea (Mar. 22, 2003) -- An E-2C Hawkeye flies over the fantail of USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) as it comes in for recovery. The Hawkeye provides all-weather airborne early warning and command and control functions for the carrier battle group. Additional missions include surface surveillance coordination, strike and interceptor control, search and rescue guidance and communications relay. An integral component of the carrier air wing, the E-2C uses computerized sensors to provide early warning, threat analyses and control of counteraction against air and surface targets. The policy for conduct of IG investigations is that investigating officers should thoroughly and impartially investigate all non-frivolous, substantive allegations of improper conduct in a professional manner, without command influence, pressure, or fear of reprisal.

The Investigations Division conducts investigations to establish sufficient facts to enable responsible authority to:

  • Determine whether allegations are substantiated; and,
  • Decide what action, if any, to take.

The Naval IG Investigations Division, Hotlines and Special Inquiries Divisions, investigate violations of law, rule, or regulations to include:

  • Fraud;
  • Gross waste or inefficiency of government resources;
  • Abuse and misuse of authority /power/position;
  • Mismanagement;
  • Substantial and specific danger to public health or safety;
  • Procurement irregularities;
  • Reprisals;
  • Wrongdoing by senior officials; and,
  • Other matters of interest to the Secretary of the Navy.
The Naval Inspector General is comprised of two divisions:

Hotlines Division

Special Inquiries Division

The Office of the Naval Inspector General is the headquarters office for all matters concerning fraud, waste, and mismanagement.  We are responsible for establishing and implementing policy regarding IG matters for the entire Navy.

The Hotlines Division manages the hotline complaints received at the Naval Inspector General's office and the Department of Defense Inspector General.  Generally, we do not conduct investigations.  Upon receipt of a complaint, we determine whether or not the subject matter is appropriate for the IG then we forward the complaint to the Echelon 2 Inspector General who has cognizance over the subject of the complaint.

If you are considering filing a hotline complaint, please review the Hotline Complaint Procedure.
