Pensacola personnel provided
healthcare, both emergent and routine; housed more than 35 obstetric
patients who could have been negatively affected by the pressure system
of the storm; delivered babies – at least one by flashlight; offered
assistance to a damaged local civilian hospital in order to keep it
operational; and assurances and assistance to a vast array of young and
elder ‘military families’ throughout those frightful days in
mid-September. “Caregivers are often as, or more, susceptible to
developing stress-related symptoms following such natural disasters as
Ivan,” said Cmdr. Edward Simmer, head of the Special Psychiatric Rapid
Intervention (SPRINT) team.
