Mine Countermeasures are critical to the ability of naval forces to shape and dominate the battlespace.  This includes not only locating and neutralizing sea mines, but also identifying where mines are not present.  Commander, Mine Warfare Command (COMINEWARCOM) meets this task worldwide, directing the U.S. Navy's standing mine countermeasures 'triad,' consisting of dedicated surface, air and underwater assets.

Maritime Mining plays a critical role in the ability of all U.S. Unified Commands and their subordinates to meet diplomatic, military and economic objectives, not only for the Navy, for all military and diplomatic services.  COMINEWARCOM is responsible for the development of all mining strategies and maintenance of the Navy's inventory of underwater mines, which is maintained by Mobile Mine Assembly Group.

COMINEWARCOM has worldwide responsibility for 14 mine countermeasures ships and 12 coastal minehunters.  The command also serves as operational commander of Naval Special Clearance Team One, Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadrons FOURTEEN (Norfolk, Va.) and FIFTEEN (Corpus Christi, Texas) and eight explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) detachments during mine countermeasures operations.
