TRIDENT Refit Facility (TRF), Bangor, was established on July 31, 1981 as the primary maintenance facility for the West Coast TRIDENT submarine fleet. In 1998 TRF
consolidated with Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity(SIMAs), Everett and Bremerton, and became Naval Intermediate Maintenance Facility Pacific Northwest (NAVIMFAC PACNORWEST). On May 15, 2003, IMF consolidated with Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and became Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility.
IMF
operates refit piers, repair shops, and a dry-dock located in the homeports of all ships, aircraft carriers, and submarines in the Pacific Northwest. They have expertise in hull, mechanical, electrical, electronics, and weapons systems repair. IMF responds to meeting the fleet's maintenance and repair needs with on-time, cost- effective, and quality service.
The Delta Pier at Bangor, so named because of its triangular configuration, has two refit piers and a dry-dock on the shore side. The Delta Pier can support three TRIDENT submarines at one time, with the
capability of nesting two additional submarines. It has one of the largest dry-docks built by the Navy and is the only dry-dock in the world constructed parallel to the shoreline. Everett piers
accommodate numerous surface ships and an aircraft carrier. Military construction of a modernized shore repair facility is underway.
As of July 11, 2003, IMF has completed 481 TRIDENT refits and three extended refit periods.
IMF has also completed 413 upkeeps on ten surface ships and two aircraft carriers homeported in Bremerton and Everett, Washington.
