"To provide rapid, flexible, and mobile acute medical and surgical services to support Marine Corps, Army and Air Force units deployed ashore, and naval amphibious task forces and battle forces afloat. In support of this mission, USNS MERCY shall be capable of receiving patients suffering from battle wounds, disease or non-battle injury, primarily by helicopter, but also by boat, while anchored or underway. Surgical and medical care shall be provided to patients until they can be returned to duty or evacuated to the continental United States for further treatment."
