Helicopter Tactical Wing, U.S. Atlantic Fleet [COMHELTACWINGLANT] was originaly established as Helicopter Tactical Wing ONE on 1 OCT 1982 at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia. The reorganization of Atlantic Fleet Naval Air Forces combined critical mission areas of Helicopter Combat Support and Helicopter Mine Countermeasures. In 1989, these mission areas were expanded to include Aerial and Seaborne Target Services, Aerial Surveillance and Reconnaissance. HELTACWING ONE was reorganized as HELTACWINGLANT in September 1993 as an Echelon Four command reporting directly to Commander, Naval Air Forces, U.S. Atlantic Fleet [COMNAVAIRLANT].
This type of wing is operationally and administratively responsible for the material support, training, and overall readiness of seven squadrons, AIMD(Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department) Corpus Christi, and the Airborne Mine Countermeasures Weapon Systems Training School. COMHELTACWINGLANT squadrons operate a multitude of aircraft and equipment including VH-3A, UH-3H, CH-46D, HH-46D, UH-46D, MH-60S, MH-53E, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, and aerial and surface targets to conduct operationally diverse missions including: VERTREP (Vertical replenishment), VOD (Vertical Onboard Deployment), SAR (Search and Rescue) AMCM (Airborne Mine Counter Measure), SPECOPS (Special Operations), DV (Distingiushed Visitor) Transfer, and RECON (Reconnaissance). HELTACWINGLANT is currently leading the way with the introduction of the MH-60S in logistics, OAMCM (Organic Airborne Mine Counter Measure) and the anti-surface roles.
