Welcome to Naples! You are about to enter into a challenging and exciting tour. First of all, put aside what you may have heard about Naples. The Naples region and the Naples/Gaeta American community are nearing the completion of the largest quality-of-life improvement project in Europe, called the Naples Improvement Initiative (NII). New government quarters have been constructed along with new schools for the kids. A large commissary/exchange retail complex is expected to open in June 2005. In short, the entire structure of the military community in Naples has changed for the better.

There are more than 100 different commands and activities in the Naples/Gaeta American military community, and there are some 200 social, professional, charitable and other organizations. Whether you are active duty, a member of the civilian component or a family member, your time and talents will be much needed here.

There are two points that are key to enjoying your tour and understanding them will greatly enhance your chances of enjoying your time here. They are both related to one simple fact – Naples is not the United States. That means living here will take some getting used to, but it also means that you will have wonderful opportunities to experience things you wouldn’t experience in the U.S.

Things work differently here. The houses are different; electrical power and other utilities are different; shopping, eating, transportation – all different. This can cause some settling in problems, but the differences can also be the source of some great positive experiences (for example, the food here is some of the best in the world, and the people are some of the warmest in the world). The American military community is constantly striving to deal with those things that are impediments to your enjoying the positive things. The vital link is your willingness to learn, adapt and enjoy.

Come to Naples with a positive attitude. You will be disoriented the first few days – jet lag, different weather and language, the upheaval of moving and other distractions will affect you. Your sponsor, your command and the American military community will help you adjust.

In order to have a smooth transition to life overseas, work closely with your sponsor to ensure that you arrive as prepared as possible. Also, I encourage you to review the NSA Naples and Joint Force Command Naples web pages to familiarize yourself with the area.

Naples is a great place; you are literally living on top of thousands of years of history. Bring your sense of adventure and be ready to explore all the area has to offer.

Welcome aboard!
