MEDICAL SERVICE CORPS
UNITED STATES NAVY

On behalf of the staff of NHRC DET DEBL, I would like to welcome you to our Home Page. We are a Bureau of Medicine and Surgery activity whose goal is to enhance force protection and optimize performance of naval personnel through biomedical research and development efforts.

OUR HISTORY

In support of Project Reliance and BRAC-91, the Navy's nonionizing electromagnetic radiation (directed energy or DE) bioeffects research programs at the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory, Pensacola, Florida relocated to Brooks AFB Base, San Antonio, Texas and activated as a detachment of the Naval Medical Research Institute, Bethesda, Maryland on 01 October 1994. This move resulted in the collocation of Navy, Army and Air Force directed energy bioeffects programs into a Tri-Service Directed Energy Bioeffects Complex. On 01 October, 1998, the Detachment realigned under the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC), San Diego, California to become NHRC Detachment, Brooks Air Force Base.

OUR MISSION

Directed energy biomedical effects research to optimize performance of Navy and Marine
Corps personnel and enhance warfighter protection

OUR RESEARCH THRUSTS

  • Identify potential sources of DE exposures

  • Determine magnitude of exposures from DE sources

  • Identify biological effects due to DE exposures

  • Assess potential risks from DE exposures

  • Evaluate/establish protection/countermeasure criteria

    OUR WARFIGHTER PROTECTION CONCERNS

Health & safety of forces in non-battle DE operating environment
(Healthy and Fit Force - Shape)

    Threat countermeasures in hostile DE operating environments;
battlefield uses of DE & directed energy weapons
    (Casualty Prevention - Prepare Now)

Care & management of DE casualties
(Casualty Care & Management - Respond)
