Preparing
Imagery for Any Day In The Navy
Thank you for your interest in submitting
your
photos
for
Any Day in the Navy.
The photos must
be recieved by 15 July 2004. The photos submitted must be shot between
1 July 2003 to 1 July 2004 to be considered.
Here are a few basic photo guidelines to
follow based on what we look for in photos:
Good composition
Proper exposure
Sharp focus
A clear subject to which our eye is drawn
Visual variety or different sizes of subjects in the images.
Some could be close-ups of faces. Other photos should be medium shots
showing one or two people interacting. We also need some wide shots
with entire groups, ships or places.
Diversity Seek out all that happens in the Navy. The
rarest photos are of the submarine community, smaller surface ships,
shore duty assignments and the Chaplain Corps.
Look for the common Navy occurrence and shoot it well - in a way no
one has seen it. From real world live-fire in the field to your YN1
pushing paper in the ships office, we want it all.
We are looking for only your best images. So save the everyday snapshots
for your friends and send the good photographs to us.
Thank you,
PH1 Shane T. McCoy, Photo Editor
All Hands magazine
Instructions:
In Photoshop or any photo editing software, acquire imagery from the
camera to the computer and save the imagery to a folder.
In the pop-up window called "JPEG Options" enter the following:
Quality: Level 10
Format Options: Baseline ("Standard")
Important: Do not perform any color corrections. Do not change the
file size, the image size, or resolution. Also, do not crop your images.
To ensure a unique file name, assign a VIRIN to each image.
To Create a VIRIN:
A VIRIN catalogues an image (e.g., 991023-M-1234S-001.jpg) which means
991023 -- Date the imagery was shot (not the date it is sent
to the JCCC)
M -- Photographer's branch of service (N=Navy, M=Marine Corps)
1234 -- Last four numbers of a photographer's Social Security
Number
S -- First letter of photographer's last name
001 -- Exposure number for that day
.jpg -- Identifies the file as a JPEG image
Captions:
Free captioning software (MediaGrid) is available on Joint Combat
Cameras Web site: http://dodimagery.afis.osd.mil/dvi/Top/standards/Download_Software.html
Choose either the Mac or PC version. A pop-up box for a username and
password will appear, but do not use your own username and password.
Instead use:
Username: contact JCCC
Password: contact JCCC
Caption Content
The caption block should contain two items only, the caption and credit
line.
Captions Must be Embedded in the Photos (file information). If caption
information is in an e-mail or separate document, it may become separated
from the photo, making the photo unusable.
-- Clearly identify the activity being documented, but try not to
state the obvious.
-- Explain what is happening, where, and include a date (in the civilian
AP style!!).
-- Include the name, rank, title and hometown of person(s) featured
in a photo.
-- Add one or two sentences which provide a brief background.
-- Provide solid information, but be brief.
-- Acronyms are fine, but identify them first.
-- Don't write in all caps.
-- Don't cut and paste text into Photoshop's File Info boxes or MediaGrid.
Word processors introduce odd characters that appear when the caption
is presented by a web browser. Instead, use MediaGrid's "store"
and "load" options
-- Writing style follows The Associated Press: Stylebook and Libel
Manual. See Appendix A and B
Credit Line
(U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Joseph Tonetti) (Released)
Accompany (Released) in the "Caption" block of MediaGrid
when you have the name and unit of the release authority in the "Public
Release Instructions" block.
Do not include the photographer's unit in the credit line. It goes
in the "PH Home Unit" block:
(e.g., JO1 Richard Buchanan, from Las Vegas, news director in the
public affairs office aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), writes
a press release about Lincoln's departure for the Persian Gulf on
June 5, 2000. The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is en route to
the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch. (U.S. Navy

MediaGrid Info Blocks
Fill out as many of the blocks as are appropriate.
In the "Email/Phone" block, include a number or address
we can use to provide feedback to the photographer or editor. Include
.com e-mail addresses if they are easier to access than
a .mil address.
In the "Operation/Exercise" block, include the name
without the word Operation or Exercise, since that word already appears
on the template.
Sending images to All Hands
We will not accept printed images this year due to the irradiation
of mail in the Washington, D.C., area before reaching us. All submissions
must be e-mailed.
All imagery must be released by your command PAO before being sent
to All Hands. Please show your images to your PAO and include the
PAOs name and position under the special instructions
block in (File Info).
E-mail images and any questions to anyday@mediacen.navy.mil
