Scientific Department Synopsis

The Astrometry Department determines the positions and motions of celestial objects and is responsible for the establishment of celestial reference frames.
The Astronomical Applications Department computes observable characteristics of celestial objects, such as rise and set times of the Sun and Moon, and produces the annual Astronomical, Nautical and Air Almanacs.
The Earth Orientation Department determines the past, current and predicted future orientation of the Earth in space.
The Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station makes, analyzes, and interprets dark sky observations and conducts research to improve the accuracy of astrometric and photometric data required to fulfill the mission of the USNO.
The James Melville Gilliss Library is an essential resource, providing necessary information for the successful completion of the Observatory's mission.
The Time Service department provides the official time for the Navy and the Department of Defense and the standard of time for the United States.
