Science at the Observatory

The USNO's Full-sky Astrometric Mapping Explorer (FAME) is an astrometric satellite designed to determine with unprecedented accuracy the positions, distances, and motions of 40 million stars within our galactic neighborhood.

The U.S. Naval Observatory is currently developing and testing a state-of-the-art optical interferometer near Flagstaff, Arizona. It is a joint project of the U. S. Naval Observatory and the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC, in association with the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff. Visit the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer Web site for more information.

The Precision Measuring Machine, or PMM, is a large, fast, highly precise photographic plate measuring engine. The goal of the PMM Project is to produce stellar catalogues which are both deep and dense, based on digitization of the major photographic surveys. Visit the Precision Measuring Machine Web site for more information. The PMM Project is located at the U.S. Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station.
