Lessons Learned About Depleted Uranium Training
In 1999 a Tri-Service depleted uranium (DU) working group was formed as a result of lessons learned from the Gulf War. Its goals were to improve DU training to enhance operational effectiveness and force health protection. . To learn more about the approach of the working group please read Section VI. Lessons Learned and Recommendations of the December 19, 2000 Environmental Exposure Report; Depleted Uranium in the Gulf (II).
The success of DU munitions in the Gulf War has increased the likelihood that threat forces will use DU munitions in future conflicts. DoD and the services need to ensure that all deployable personnel know what DU is, how it is used, how they might encounter it on the battlefield, the hazard this presents, and how to prevent or minimize personal exposures.
