030816-N-1928O-041 North Atlantic Ocean (Aug. 16, 2003) -- Crewmembers assigned to “The Liberty Bells” of Patrol Squadron Sixty Six (VP-66), maneuver a P-3C Orion in search of the ‘enemy’ submarine during Keflavik Tactical Exchange 2003 (KEFTACEX 03). Seven countries are participating in the annual anti-submarine warfare training exercise. VP-66 from Naval Air Station Willow Grove, Penn., is the only squadron comprised entirely of Naval Reservists that are participating in KEFTACEX 03. (Aug. 16, 2003) -- Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class Mark Mainland, of Racine, Wis., loads an under-water surveillance sonobuoy into an ejection chute a P-3C Orion assigned to “The Liberty Bells” of Patrol Squadron Sixty Six (VP-66) during Keflavik Tactical Exchange 2003 (KEFTACEX 03). The sonobuoys act as detection devices that relay an array of data regarding submarines that are being tracked by the aircraft. Seven countries are participating in the annual anti-submarine warfare exercise. VP-66 from Naval Air Station Willow Grove, Penn., is the only squadron comprised entirely of Naval Reservists that are participating in KEFTACEX 03. FH-3 staff have seen more than 500 patients and conducted more than 280 surgical procedures since constructing the Navy’s first Expeditionary Medical Facility in a combat zone and seeing their first patient April 1. FH-3’s surgical capabilities range from Ear, Nose and Throat and Neurosurgery to Orthopedics and Ophthalmology, as the only Echelon Three hospital currently in Iraq. (Jan 10, 2004) -- The decommissioned aircraft carrier Midway prepares to moor at its final resting place at Navy pier where it will become the largest museum devoted to carriers and naval aviation. The ship was temporarily moored at Naval Air Station North Island this past week so that preparations could be made to formally present the aircraft carrier to the city of San Diego. When commissioned on September 10, 1945 as USS Midway (CVB 41) she was the largest carrier ever put to sea. (Dec. 16, 2003) -- An Air Force Staff Sgt. assigned to Air Force Water Survival School at Naval Air Station Pensacola, prepares for his landing by utilizing an emergency parachute, inflatable life preserver and single-person life raft. The school’s mission is to ensure each student is prepared to survive an ejection or bailout at sea. Subjects taught at the survival school include: parachuting into water, survival equipment, search and rescue techniques, medical and psychological aspects of sea survival, and hazardous marine life. 031117-N-3994W-048 Aboard USS Raven (MHC 61) Nov. 17, 2003 -- Quartermaster Seaman John Tadyeh reaches for Armed Services Edition (ASE) books aboard the coastal mine hunter USS Raven (MHC 61). The founder of the Legacy Project, Andrew Carroll, flew to Bahrain to assist in handing out more than 20,000 Armed Service Edition book throughout U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and 5th Fleet area of operations. Carroll hopes to hand out books in Iraq and aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 65) during his visit to the area. The Legacy Project is a volunteer initiative seeking out historically significant letters from all American Wars. The mission of the organization is to honor those who served their country by ensuring that their experiences, their sacrifices, and their thoughts are preserved for future generations.
