Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA)

In 1993, Congress passed and the President signed into law the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA, or "The Results Act"), P.L. 103-62. The broad intent of the legislation is to enhance the effectiveness, efficiency, and accountability of government programs by directing federal agencies to more singularly focus their management efforts on the results that are achieved—and away from such traditional concerns such as staffing and activity levels. Under GPRA, agencies must set goals, measure performance, and report on their accomplishments. And they must also ask and answer some basic questions: What is our mission? What are our goals and how will we achieve them? How can we measure performance? How will we use that information to make improvements?
