Facilities and Instrumentation

Supports upgrades to animal facilities for the conduct of biomedical and behavioral research funded by the U.S. Public Health Service and assists institutions to comply with the Animal Welfare Act and other Federal requirements related to the care and use of laboratory animals.

Shared Instrumentation Grants:

Supports the acquisition of a major, advanced instrument in the $750,000 to $2,000,000 range (direct costs only). The instrument must be used on a shared basis at institutions with a high concentration of investigators supported by NIH research project grants.

Small Business Award Programs

Small Business Innovation Research Awards (SBIR):
Phase I (R43) supports research to establish the technical merit and feasibility of research ideas that may ultimately lead to commercial products or services that will have broad application to biomedical research. Phase I also determines the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization prior to providing further federal support.

Phase II (R44) supports research or research and development (R&D;) initiated in Phase I that is likely to result in commercial products or services.

SBIR areas of interest to NCRR:
  • Technology-driven research of new instruments, devices, and related methodologies (or improvements to existing ones) related to: biomedical engineering, imaging, informatics or computer science/technology, and mass spectrometry, X-ray absorption/diffraction, and integrated technologies, for example.
  • Clinical technology, instruments, devices and related methodologies that may have broad applications and enhance the ability to do clinical research.
  • R&D; methods and technologies to improve laboratory animal care, use, and management; to identify and develop spontaneous or engineered vertebrate and invertebrate animal models; or to develop and refine new preservation technologies. Models include cell cultures and nonmammalian organisms as well as nonbiological models for studies of human diseases and biological processes.

Small Business Technology Transfer Program (STTR):
Phase I (R41) and Phase II (R42) of the STTR Program seek to increase the commercialization of technology developed through Federal funding that will ultimately benefit the public. However, the unique feature of the STTR Program is the requirement for the small business concern applicant organization to partner and formally collaborate with research universities and other nonprofit research institutions. Important differences between the SBIR and STTR program requirements are explained on the NIH SBIR and STTR Web site.

STTR areas of interest to NCRR:
