Publications Series

Fact Sheets
Fact Sheets present a wide variety of topics, with a focus on USGS science, programs, projects, and data and how they address issues of public interest. They may summarize results of previous published studies and their implications or release new information about USGS programs and products. Fact Sheet topics may include progress reports of mission programs, preliminary reports on topical investigations or catastrophic events, hazard and resource assessments, and classification procedures. Fact Sheets are available, at no cost, from U.S. Geological Survey, Information Services, Box 25286, Denver, CO 80225.
Special Books
Special books are those publications that fall outside the scope of the standard USGS formal series designations or that may be of particular interest to certain groups.
General Information Products [New Series]
General Information Products are specifically intended to educate and inform teachers, students, the news media, nature enthusiasts, and anyone interested in studying things in, on, or around the Earth. The focus is on USGS programs, projects, services, and general scientific information of public interest. The series covers a broad range of topics in a variety of media, including General Interest Publications booklets, pamphlets, postcards, posters, videos, teacher kits, CD/DVDs, bookmarks, and interactive and motion graphics.
Digital Data Series and Data Series [New Series]
The Digital Data Series encompasses a broad range of digital data, including computer programs, interpreted results of investigations, comprehensive reviewed data bases, spatial data sets, digital images and animation, and multimedia presentations that are not intended for printed release. Scientific reports in this series cover a wide variety of subjects on all facets of USGS investigations and research that are of lasting scientific interest and value. Releases in the Digital Data Series offer access to scientific information that is available in digital form; the information is primarily intended for viewing, processing, and (or) analyzing by computer. The Data Series is intended for release of basic data sets, data bases, and multimedia or motion graphics. This series can include videos, computer programs, and collections of digital photographs. CD-ROM's in the series are available by mail from: U.S. Geological Survey, Information Services, Box 25286, Federal Center, Denver, CO 80225. No discounts apply to CD-ROM's.
Circulars
Circulars cover a wide variety of topics concisely and clearly to provide a synthesis of understanding about processes, geographic areas, issues, or USGS programs. The series is intended to broadly educate and inform readers about science and public-policy topics related to the mission of the USGS. The series is not used to present new data or new scientific findings.
Bulletins
Bulletins contain significant data and interpretations that are of lasting scientific interest but are generally more limited in scope or geographic coverage than Professional Papers. They include the results of resource studies and of geologic and topographic investigations, as well as collections of short papers related to a specific topic.
Professional Papers
Professional Papers are the premier series of the USGS. They are comprehensive scientific reports of wide and lasting interest and scientific importance, characterized by thoroughness of study and breadth of scientific or geographic coverage. The series may include collections of related papers addressing different aspects of a single scientific topic, either issued together under one cover or separately as chapters.
Scientific Investigations Reports [New Series]
Scientific Investigations Reports contain significant data and interpretations of lasting scientific interest but are generally narrower in scope than Professional Papers. The series includes collections of related papers addressing different aspects of a single scientific topic, either issued as individual chapters or as a single volume; proceedings and abstracts for USGS-sponsored meetings; some field trip guidebooks and road logs; and general manuals.

Open-File Reports
Open-File Reports are ised to disseminate information that must be released immediately to fill a public need for information that is not sufficiently refined to warrant publication in one of the other USGS series. Included are interpretive information that needs to be released immediately; maps and reports (and their supporting data) that need to be released as supporting documentation because they are referenced, discussed, or interpreted in another information product; preliminary findings (pending a final map or report); interim computer programs and user guides; and bibliographies. Most Open-File Reports are available from USGS Information Services, Box 25286, Federal Center, Denver, CO 80225 (telephone 1-888-ASK-USGS or 303-2-2-4700; fax 303-202-4693).
Poster Sessions
This category comprises Web versions of presentations made by USGS scientists at meetings of professional societies, such as the Geological Society of America or the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

Information Periodicals

Mineral Commodity Summaries
Published on an annual basis, the Mineral Commodity Summaries is the earliest Government publication to furnish estimates covering nonfuel mineral industry data. Data sheets contain information on the domestic industry structure, Government programs, tariffs, and 5-year salient statistics for over 90 individual minerals and materials.
Metal Industry Indicators
The Metal Industry Indicators (MII) is a monthly on-line newsletter that analyzes and forecasts the economic health of five metal industries: primary metals, steel, copper, primary and secondary aluminum, and aluminum mill products.
Mineral Industry Surveys
The Mineral Industry Surveys (MIS) are periodic on-line statistical and economic reports designed to provide timely statistical data on production, distribution, stocks and consumption of significant mineral commodities. The surveys are issued monthly, quarterly, annually, or at other regular intervals, depending on the need for current data.
Statistical Compendium
The Statistical Compendium provides a consistent set of official, long-term (20 years or more) data series through 1990 for selected commodities to facilitate analysis of long-term trends in these mineral sectors
