Message from the Director

Dr. Chip Groat For 125 years, the USGS has provided the Department of the Interior, the Nation, and the world with the science needed to make important decisions and safeguard society. I am delighted to have the opportunity to mark this significant anniversary and invite you to join us as we celebrate 125 years of science for America--the mission that has guided us, the people and traditions that have shaped us, the science that has made us great, and the partnerships that will continue to help us achieve our goals for the next 125 years.

As an unbiased science organization, our scientists are dedicated to the timely, relevant, and impartial study of the landscape, our natural resources, and the natural hazards that threaten us. We are proud of our work and grateful to those who have supported us in the past and continue to support our efforts. Together we have made a difference in the quality of life in America and abroad, and we are excited to have this opportunity to commemorate our accomplishments. I hope that you will enjoy the many products and events we have planned to recognize this special occasion. Please join us for the next 125 years as we work to provide the science that is needed for a healthier, safer, and more prosperous future.

Dr. Chip Groat,
USGS Director
