The NIH Chimpanzee Management Program (ChiMP) supports long-term, cost-effective
housing and maintenance at three NIH-supported facilities for chimpanzees, funded
by NCRR through cooperative agreements. In addition, a reserve colony of chimpanzees
previously used in virological research is supported by a contract. Furthermore,
cooperative agreements and grants also support a database and applied research
that optimize the use of chimpanzees in research.
The NIH ChiMP Office resides within the Division of Comparative Medicine at NCRR
to develop and implement policies and provide programmatic oversight for this
program. Each chimpanzee facility complies with the Animal Welfare Act and policies
concerning laboratory animal care and use.
