Requests for Applications (RFAs) are formal statements that invite grant applications
in a well-defined scientific area to accomplish specific program objectives. An
RFA indicates the estimated amount of funds set aside for the competition, the
estimated number of awards to be made, and the application receipt date(s). Applications
usually are reviewed by an initial review group convened by the Institute or Center
that issued the RFA.
Program Announcements (PAs) are postings that describe new or ongoing extramural
activities or funding mechanisms. PAs also define the purpose and duration of
activities or funding mechanisms and specify the eligibility requirements for
participation. Furthermore, they often outline the research objectives and special
requirements of the program.
Notices (NOTs) are postings that provide general information on a range of topics--including
supplemental details regarding RFAs and PAs. NOTs may announce award availability
and promote the submission of applications or proposals; announce a limited competition;
provide news on policy and policy changes, application receipt dates, funding,
and funding mechanisms. NOTs may provide provide program guidelines or award eligibility
requirements. They also list workshops of interest and the availability of new
publications.
