Power Supply Guidelines

Overview

As the acquisition community moves into new ways of doing business, power supplies, which are a critical component in today's combat weapon systems, are resurfacing as a growing area of risk. Previous SECNAV guidance (NAVMAT P-4855-1A/NAVSO P-3641) on Navy power supplies required updating to incorporate lessons learned, commercial best practices and improved methodologies for procuring COTS/NDI and Custom designed power supplies. This updated guidance, NAVSO P-3641A (October 1999), provides program managers with an important tool for improving fleet readiness and reducing total ownership cost of their weapon systems.

OASN(RD&A)ABM has developed updated guidelines regarding Power Supply procurement and acquisition strategies, consistent with DoD's acquisition reform initiatives.

The document, NAVSO P-3641A, is divided into five sections. Section 1 is written for program managers and provides basic but critical points to consider in acquiring power supplies. Section 2 addresses Power System Considerations and their impact on power supply design, selection, and application. Sections 3, 4 and 5 provide guidance in the design, test and manufacturing of Low Voltage DC Power Supplies, High Voltage DC Power Supplies, and AC Output Power Supplies, i.e., Inverters, Frequency Changers, and Uninterruptible Power Supplies. The appendices contain a variety of checklists, platform power characteristics, derating criteria and a glossary of specialized terms.
