Does Medicare cover testing for influenza?
  Question
Does Medicare cover testing for influenza?
  Answer
Medicare will cover those tests that are reasonable and necessary for the diagnosis of a disease. In the case of testing for influenza, it certainly can be considered to be reasonable and medically necessary, but is not so in all situations. The program has delegated to our carriers the discretion to determine if this test is reasonable and necessary for an individual circumstance. There is no superceding national coverage decision regarding influenza testing.
