Special Board Considerations

SECNAVINST 1401.1B authorizes convening of special boards for officers in or above the promotion zone when regular promotion boards:

- fail to consider an eligible officer;
- act contrary to law;
- involve material administrative or factual error; or
- lack material information

* Eligible officers must request a Special Board through SECNAV.

* 6 - 12 Months is the normal (Can take longer) processing time to determine if a special board is warranted.

Submit requests for a Special Board in standard letter format to Secretary of the Navy via Commander, Navy Personnel Command (PERS-480) at:
