Open-File Report 97-492

Brief History and Description of Data

[See History of NURE HSSR Program for a summary of the entire program.]

Totals of 199 sediment and 238 water samples were collected from 239 locations during July and August of 1977 within the Seldovia quadrangle as part of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) Seldovia Quadrangle NURE Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) study. All samples were analyzed by LASL for uranium, and sediment samples were also analyzed for up to 42 additional elements. When LASL was unable to complete the Seldovia quadrangle data release report, the data were sent to the Bendix Field Engineering Corporation in Grand Junction, Colorado and subsequently published as the microfiche GJBX-92(81) report. This report does not give any details on the sample collection or analytical methods used for these samples.

The following is a list of NURE sample types collected in the Seldovia quadrangle.

Summary of Seldovia quadrangle sample types.
Sediment Sample Type Number of Samples Water Sample Type Number of Samples
Wet Streams 113 Streams 120
Wet Lakes 85 Lakes 117
Wet Artificial Ponds 1 Artificial Ponds 1
Total Sediments 199 Total Waters 238

These Seldovia quadrangle samples were analyzed by one or more of the following methods:

Sediment Samples

Water Samples

Composition of the NEW-FORMAT NURE Data Files

The data in the NEW-FORMAT NURE data files consist of reformatted records from the GJBX-92(81) report. Any changes in the data or problems found are noted in the REFORMAT comment field.

Download The Data

The data files are in dBase IV .dbf format. A complete description of the data fields and coding schemes is available online - On-Line Manual for New-Format NURE HSSR Data Files. The data are transferred as gzip .gz compressed files. Simply activate the links below to download the data files. Use gunzip or popular commercial and shareware decompression programs to expand the .gz files. Additional information and executable versions of gzip and gunzip for various systems are available on the gzip home page. If you experience trouble downloading files, try pressing the shift key when clicking (Netscape for Windows), or right-clicking (Internet Explorer for Windows), or pressing the option key when clicking (Netscape and Internet Explorer for Macintosh).

Notes for Data Users

Water samples from this quadrangle are reported to have been acidified with nitric acid but NOT filtered in the field.

Other NURE Geochemical Data for the Seldovia Quadrangle

LASL compiled all of the regional HSSR data from Alaskan NURE studies and produced a report [GJBX-32(83] that graphically displays the distribution of selected elements for most of the State. No additional geochemical data were released with this report.
