The Mission
The Ohio Field Office will ensure safe, cost-effective, and environmentally sound closure and long-term stewardship of facilities designated to it by the Secretary of Energy. It will do this in accordance with applicable Federal law, executive directives, state and Federal regulations, and with special attention to the needs and goals of the communities affected by these facilities.
History
In the aftermath of the Cold War, the United States has begun addressing the environmental consequences of five decades of nuclear weapons production. In support of this effort, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1995 directed the Department of Energy (DOE) to describe the waste streams generated during each step in the production of nuclear weapons.
