Are these data and images copyrighted?

No, all of our data and images are in the public domain, unless specifically marked otherwise - with the notable exception of trademarks, logos, and trade names such as the NOAA emblem and the Department of Commerce seal which are the property of the U.S. Government and are trademarks of the Commerce Department and require permission for use.

All other images, and data, are available for your use. We would appreciate a link/credit/byline, as appropriate. We ask that you please cite the original data contributors and sources of funding when you use data from NGDC. As required by 17 U.S.C. 403, third parties producing copyrighted works consisting predominantly of the material produced by U.S. government agencies must provide notice with such work(s) identifying the U.S. Government material incorporated and stating that such material is not subject to copyright protection.

How do I set my watch or compass?

You must be looking for the magnetic declination page - choose the "Compute your declination" link to the left, under the image - if you need some extra help, please send questions to the contact on that page.

How deep is the ocean?

The deepest part of the ocean (38,518 feet deep) is found in the Marianas Trench. For an animated image try this link, and for more information try this external link. Where can I find more answers to questions about marine geology & geophysics or oceanography?

What about other oceanographic data like currents, salinity, and ocean temperatures?

Our sister data center, the National Oceanographic Data Center archives and makes available physical, chemical, and biological oceanographic data including the topics above and more. Here at NGDC, we handle data from the seafloor and below.

How do I get to the page with all the images?

For direct access to a wide variety of images of MGG data, try our images page. This page also links to other major pages in the MGG area containing more images. For posters and slide sets available, also see our data products - they are available directly through the NGDC online store.

How do I purchase CD-ROMs, Posters, Slide Sets, or Publications?

Here is a direct link to the NOAA National Data Centers Online Store, there is also a link to marine geology and geophysics products within the Online Store on the MGG data announcements page. The information page for each product in marine geology and geophysics also offers a direct link to the Online Store for pricing/ordering. Can I request custom images or order data in a different form?

Yes. To ask about custom images, please contact Peter.W.Sloss@noaa.gov. You can also create a custom CD-ROM of geophysical data online, pay for it through the online store, and have it shipped to you. We offer custom images and data products of all kinds; when in doubt, just contact us, if you aren't sure who to contact, email Robin.R.Warnken@noaa.gov.
