The Navy News Service (NavNews) is the official news service of the Department of the Navy of the United States of America. NavNews contains official news and information about fleet operations and exercises, personnel policies, budget actions, and more. This is the same news service that is distributed through Navy circuits to ships at sea and to shore commands around the world. NavNews is produced in Washington, D.C., for the Navy Office of Information by the Publishing Division of the Naval Media Center. -USN- -USN- 2. In what formats is NavNews published? On what schedule? NavNews is published in straight ASCII text and in a desktop-published PDF format. The text edition is best for on-screen reading, browsing or searching. Because it is ordinary ASCII text, it may be downloaded and then retrieved into virtually any word processor for use in local Plans of the Day/Week, base newspapers, command newsletters or other local publications. The text edition is published weekly, typically on Wednesday evenings, with occasional special issues. The desktop edition is fully produced and ready for downloading and printing. This edition is intended to be downloaded and printed intact, thus providing smaller commands with a ready-made Navy News Service in an attractive, readable format. The NavNews desktop edition is offered in PDF format. To use the NavNews desktop edition, you need to obtain a copy of Acrobat reader. The desktop edition is published weekly, typically on Thursday afternoons. -USN- -USN- 3. How do I get NavNews as a naval message? All Navy commands receive NavNews as a naval message (message text format) through the NavNews collective address. If you are not receiving NavNews in your message traffic, check with your admin or Comm officer, or with the CommSta or NTCC that serves your command. The message version of NavNews is the text edition, except that it is transmitted in all capital letters and is automatically divided into sections when it exceeds the maximum length. -USN- -USN- 4. How do I get NavNews through SALTS? Most Navy supply departments, both ashore and afloat, are connected into the Streamlined Automated Logistics Terminal System (SALTS). Both the text and desktop editions are available through SALTS. Ask your supply officer for details. -USN- -USN- 5. How do I get NavNews through the World Wide Web (WWW)? The World Wide Web uses a client-server scheme to provide a flexible, easy-to-use interface for retrieving Internet resources. Both current and back issues of the text and desktop editions are available through the World Wide Web from the NAVY NEWS section of the Navy Web Site. To reach NavNews via the Web, point your web browser to the following Uniform Resource Locator (URL): http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/news/navnews/.www/navnews .html Ask your host administrator, system operator or ADP officer if the World Wide Web is accessible through your system. -USN- -USN- 6. How do I get NavNews by electronic mail? E-mail subscriptions to NavNews are available to individuals and organizations. All members of the Navy Public Affairs Directory who have submitted an e-mail address automatically receive this service and do not need to submit a subscription request. An e-mail distribution list for the NavNews text edition is maintained to feed relay and redistribution points and to support those individuals who are unable to receive NavNews otherwise. To subscribe to NavNews by e-mail, send an e-mail message to listserv@mediacen.navy.mil with "subscribe navynews" (without quotes) in the body. To unsubscribe, type "signoff navynews" (without quotes) in the body. -USN- -USN- 7. How do I send feedback to NavNews? Feedback concerning electronic distribution of NavNews, including distribution questions, problems, or suggestions, should be sent by e-mail to navynews- request@mediacen.navy.mil. Feedback concerning the editing or design of NavNews, including questions about content and inputs for future issues, should be sent by e-mail to pubs@mediacen.navy.mil. -USN-
