The Best Manufacturing Practices (BMP) web site is the source for best practices and innovative technologies. The BMP Program is a unique industry and government cooperative technology transfer effort that improves the global competitiveness of the U.S. industrial base. The primary objective toward this goal is simple: to identify and validate best practices, document them, and then encourage industry, government, and academia to share information about them. By fostering the sharing of best practices, BMP has become a national resource in helping organizations benchmark with the best, learn from others’ attempts, and avoid costly and time-consuming duplication. The BMP Center of Excellence is a partnership among the Office of Naval Research’s BMP Program; the Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Export Administration; and the University of Maryland’s Engineering Research Center.

Lean Aircraft Initiative at MIT

An initiative among MIT, government, labor unions, and the defense aerospace business to revolutionize the industry, reinvigorate the workplace, and reinvest in America using a philosophy called "lean." Using "best life cycle value" as a beacon, LAI has identified five key themes for research in Phase III including: measuring value to the enterprise; time; organizations and people; knowledge and information infrastructure; and government as a lean customer & operator. LAI's plan is to address barriers to implementation in the transition to lean and to emphasize knowledge deployment.
