HRSA Grants Support Public Health Nursing Field Experiences

HHS' Health Resources and Services Administration has announced grants totaling $249,848 to 10 schools of nursing to strengthen the field experience component of public health nursing baccalaureate programs.

The awards will provide seed money to plan, implement and evaluate public health nursing field experiences, including the preparation of faculty and health department staff.  Nursing students will learn about core functions of public health, essential public health services, the missions of state and local health departments, and how public health practitioners work together to protect the public’s health.

HRSA’s Division of Nursing funds a wide range of grant programs that strengthen existing nursing programs and seek to reduce the nation’s critical nursing shortage. Recently, six new programs were authorized under the Nurse Reinvestment Act of 2002 to increase the number of qualified nurses and the quality of nursing services across the nation: Nursing Scholarships, Building Career Ladders, Internship and Residency, Enhancing Patient Care/Nurse Retention, Comprehensive Geriatric Education, and Nurse Faculty Loans.   For more information, visit http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/nursing/reinvestmentact.htm.

A list of grant awards, which are effective July 1, 2003, is attached below. For more information, contact Irene Sandvold at 301-443-6333, or isandvold@hrsa.gov.
