Health Tip: Avoid Hot Tub Rash

  • (HealthDayNews) -- Dermatitis is a skin infection that's often acquired from contaminated swimming pools, spas or hot tubs. The skin may become itchy and progress to a blistery, tender red rash, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.

Because a swimsuit can harbor contaminated water longer, the rash may be worse under a person's bathing gear.

The rash usually occurs within a few days of exposure, and normally clears in a few days without medical treatment.

Take note that hot tubs and spas have warmer water than pools, which makes chlorine and similar chemicals evaporate faster. Ask the person who maintains your tub or pool how often the water is tested and disinfected.
