CD-ROM/DVD Product Development

DTIC® released its first CD-ROM title - Technical Report (TR) Database on CD-ROM - in 1991 using commercial CD-ROM production services. The emphasis of the project then shifted toward the provision of an in-house CD-ROM publishing capability. DTIC procured its own CD-ROM publishing capability in 1993 and implemented it during 1994. It allows creation of CD-ROM applications in a multi-platform computer environment and provides for low volume CD-ROM disc replication.

During FY 96, two new CD-ROM titles were developed by special request from OSD - Messages to the Troops in Bosnia and Defense Science and Technology Strategy and Plans.

During FY 99, the first Windows version of the TR Database on CD-ROM software was released and a major software upgrade with advanced retrieval enhancements was released in December of 2001.

DTIC is now moving into the Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) development arena. It has created a prototype DVD version of its popular TR Database on CD-ROM product. This DVD product will contain all the same features and capabilities of its sister CD-ROM product but will be on a single DVD-ROM disc. It is expected to be released as a product during FY 2003.
