Introduction

The CBIAC, operated by Battelle Memorial Institute and supported by Horne Engineering Services, Inc., Innovative Emergency Management, Inc., MTS Technologies, Inc., QuickSilver Analytics, Inc., and SciTech, Inc., is a full service Department of Defense (DoD) Information Analysis Center (IAC) under contract to the Office of the Secretary of Defense and administratively managed by the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) under the DoD IAC Program Office (Contract No. SPO700-00-D-3180).  Established in 1986, the CBIAC serves as the DoD focal point for information related to Chemical and Biological Defense (CBD) technology.

Functions

The CBIAC generates, acquires, processes, analyzes, and disseminates CB Science and Technology Information (STI) in support of the Combatant Commanders, warfighters, the Reserve Components, the CB Defense Research, Development, and Acquisition community, and other federal, state, and local government agencies. The CBIAC helps the DoD and these other agencies meet their demanding technological needs and implement high-priority Research and Development (R&D) initiatives through the prompt and expert application of existing scientific and technical information by:

  • Identifying and acquiring relevant data and information from all available sources and in all media;
  • Processing data and acquisitions into suitable storage and retrieval systems;
  • Identifying, developing, and applying available analytical tools and techniques for the interpretation and application of stored data and acquisitions;
  • Disseminating focused information, data sets and technical analyses to managers, planners, scientists, engineers and military field personnel for the performance of mission related tasks;
  • Anticipating requirements for CB STI; and
  • Identifying and reaching out to emerging CB defense organizations.
  • Scope

    The scope of the CBIAC includes, but is not limited to, the aspects of chemical and biological defense technology listed below:

    Government agencies and private industry under contract to the Department of Defense and other government agencies can contact the CBIAC. We serve as a center for the acquisition, compilation, analysis and dissemination of information relevant to chemical warfare and chemical and biological defense technology. The CBIAC staff is available to answer questions from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. EST, Monday through Friday. For customers in those areas, services are also available through our Washington, DC and Dugway Proving Ground Satellite Operations.

    CBIAC Programs

    To serve the CB defense and Homeland Security communities, the CBIAC is organized into three programs. The Core Program provides Basic Products, Information Products and Services, Inquiry and Referral Services, and Current Awareness and Promotions at little or no cost to authorized users. The Technical Area Task and Knowledge Management and Development Programs provide specialized analytical and technical efforts requiring work above and beyond those provided through the Core Program whose cost will depend on the scope involved.
