Introduction

The CBIAC has a collection of over 70,000 Chemical and Biological Defense (CBD) and Homeland Security (HLS) related items in a variety of formats and maintains access to a wide range of journals, magazines, and newsletters on CBD and HLS topics.

Bibliographic Database

Qualified users may directly access the CBIAC Bibliographic Database via our World Wide Web site free of charge. The CBIAC's expert staff is also available to perform searches under our Inquiry and Referral Services. U.S. DoD agencies, other government entities and their qualified contractors are eligible to access this database. For direct access to this database, please complete the database access request form. Once approved, you will receive a user name, and password.

The CBIAC Bibliographic Database (BD) is an on-line, menu-driven database, which provides users remote access, via the internet, to over 123,000 citations to documents across all CBD and HLS subject areas. Of these citations, over 70,000 correspond to documents at the CBIAC, while the rest are available through other collections, such as the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC), the U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground Technical Information Center, and the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM) library. Please contact the CBIAC directly for information on any document referenced in our BD.

Accessible Information Resources

Through our accounts with DTIC and other major commercial database services (some of which are discussed below), the CBIAC maintains access to over 1,000 databases. CBIAC users may access the information in these databases via the CBIAC's expert staff. Our experienced researchers can tailor searches to meet your information needs. See the description of our Inquiry and Referral Services for additional information on posing an inquiry.

Chemical Defense Materials Database (CDMD): The CDMD contains data detailing the effects of chemical warfare agents, decontaminants and simulants on materials used to construct military equipment. This database covers 1,100 materials, and offers information on: Test Parameters and Data, Material Descriptions; Test Descriptions, Chemical Descriptions; Sources; and Material Nomenclature, Chemical Nomenclature, and Property Nomenclature. The CDMD does not definitively determine whether or not systems are (or will be) contamination survivable because these requirements are defined for system, or subsystem, performance rather than for properties of materials, and system or subsystem performance cannot readily be predicted from effects of agents/decontaminants on materials. Data gaps also exist in the CDMD due to variations in test procedures in different laboratories or at different times and because of resource constraints on updates. Distribution of the information from the CDMD is limited to the Department of Defense (DoD), US Government Agencies and DoD Contractors. The CDMD can be accessed through the CBIAC Inquiry Staff by contacting the CBIAC or by completing the Inquiry Request Form on this site.

Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC): Defense RDT&E On-line System (DROLS) Technical Reports (TR) Database: DTIC DROLS TR contains a collection of over one million citations to documented scientific and technical reports of defense-sponsored research, development, test and evaluation activities.

DIALOGŪ (Knight-Ridder Information Inc.): DIALOGŪ provides access to over 1000 databases covering a broad range of disciplines, and includes scientific and technical literature from full-text trade journals, newspapers and news wires. It includes details on chemical substances, information on patents issued worldwide, demographic data and company financial statistics.

Internet - World Wide Web (WWW): The CBIAC uses the full range of internet navigational and search tools to access CBD technical information to be found on government, military, commercial, industrial, and academic sites world wide. Our staff has developed exceptional skill in locating scientific and technical information on the Internet.

National Technical Information Service (NTIS): The NTIS database contains bibliographic citations for unclassified technical reports generated by the U.S. government, along with selected reports from foreign governments. It provides multidisciplinary coverage of scientific, technical, and business related information. The NTIS bibliographic database may be accessed through numerous commercial on-line services, including DIALOGŪ.

On-line Computer Library Center (OCLC): OCLC offers computer-based products, services, and systems including Interlibrary Loan (ILL) to libraries and other educational organizations. With more than 7,900 affiliated libraries in the U.S., Canada, Europe and the Far East, OCLC is the largest library information network in the world.

Document Imaging Capabilities

The CBIAC has the capability to convert documents to electronic format. We are currently converting our products and Technical Area Task reports so that, in the future, they will be viewable electronically in full text.
