Defense RDT&E Online
System (Legacy - DROLS) Training
There are two versions of DROLS. Legacy
DROLS is a command driven search engine accessing a mainframe containing
classified references. Private STINET
replaces the unclassified version of Legacy DROLS for the TR and RS collections.
Private STINET is searched in a modern web browser environment. Sanitized
records of classified citations are included in Private STINET.
Even users accessing DROLS through alternate
products such as, Private STINET or
TR Database on CD-ROM will benefit from learning about the DROLS database
contents and structure. The DROLS courses briefly cover some alternate
means of access and provide a copy of the DROLS database access product
matrix. Each product provides partial capabilities of the current native
DROLS interface.
Introduction
to DROLS
Legacy (Classified) DROLS is an extremely
powerful research tool. Because it was designed for professional searchers,
and is so robust, training is the most efficient way to learn to build
and refine a strategy. This three-day session provides the information
needed to obtain accurate results to support current research and avoid
redundant effort. DROLS retrieval is significantly different from many
other online systems.
Introduction to DROLS is a three-day, hands-on
course for users who access Legacy DROLS via STU-III or through a dedicated
line. DROLS is a classified system that provides access to DTIC's three
major databases. The course covers searching and ordering functions with
emphasis on developing effective search techniques for accessing the Technical
Reports Bibliographic Database, the Research Summaries Database (formerly
called WUIS), the Independent Research & Development Database.
Students must have the necessary clearance.
Arrangements can be made for offsite training to be given by Headquarters
or Regional Office instructors for facilities with the necessary equipment.
DROLS courses are scheduled regularly at
DTIC (see Training Schedule). To sign up for
